Tenafly
Tenafly, like many early Bergen County settlements, was Inhabited in the mid 1600's by the Dutch. Tenafly was originally a farm town where farmers were raising vegetable and cattle. The Dutch settlers, including the Westervelt family, had large tracts of land that had been original forests and were cultivated for food for the New York City market. In 1874, Tenafly (which derives from the Dutch for 10 swamps) was incorporated into Palisades Township and became an independent borough in 1894. The New York architect, Daniel Topping Atwood, changed the look of the town in the 1860's, with the design of many iconic buildings including the railroad station that has become an historic site. It now houses the busy and well know local lunch and dinner restaurant, Angelique.
Most people move to Tenafly because of its school system, affluent lifestyle, beautiful tree lined streets, large expansive homes on larger lots and its easy accessibility to New York City. Its bustling downtown area of small boutique shops, restaurants, the famous Clinton Inn Hotel, offers a very easy and casual lifestyle.
Most notable of reasons to live in Tenafly is its premiere school system, which year in and out, ranks in the top 5 in the state and always in the top one percent in the US. With its 4 elementary schools (Mackay, Smith, Maugham, and Stillman) and its middle school and high school it has consistently been named a Blue Ribbon School System by the federal government.
Tenafly Nature Presenve is 400 lush acres of forested land with natural wildlife of deer, turkey and other smaller mammals, birds and wildlife. It is a place of learning about our natural habitat and is perfect for hiking on its many trails and relaxing along its ponds and gardens.
Homes on the East Hill, where most lots are at least an acre are the most sought after are usually sold for well over a million dollars and up to 5 or 6 million. Even modest homes on the west side of the town are in the high $600's and above for an even modest home.
