In 2012, Forbes Magazine ranked Alpine as America’s most expensive ZIP code with a medium home price of $4,250,000. It has consistently been in the top 5 towns in the country as the wealthiest community, the highest medium home prices, and one of the best communities in which to live.
Alpine was formed as a community by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature in 1903, from existing portions of Harrington Township. In 1904, it acquired additional land from the borough of Cresskill. The relatively small borough made up of mostly 1 acre plus lots with large expansive homes within its 9.23 square miles. As of the 2010 census, there were 1,849 people with 611 households.
Alpine Public Schools are from kindergarten through 8th grade. Ninth thru 12th grade students attend the Tenafly High School as part of a program between the two towns in which Tenafly receives $14,392 per student as in 2011/2012 school year.
Alpine's eastern border sits atop the Palisades along the Hudson River with views across the Hudson River towards NY's Westchester County. The Alpine Boat Basin, located within the Palisades Interstate Park, is both a public boat basin for small boats and a picnic area. The Alpine Pavilion is an open air picnic area built by the Civil Works Administration in 1934 and can be rented out for parties and affairs. Additionally the Blackledge-Kearney House is the site where Lord Cornwallis landed British troops in 1776 in pursuit of the Continental Army after George Washington’s defeat in The Battle of New York.
Homes in Alpine are huge, with many residences occupying over 10,000 square feet of space. Driving through some of Alpine's pristine streets, one will observe some of the most elegant designed homes many behind gated walls and fences.
